What is Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy for PTSD and trauma-related disorders. It is a structured type of therapy where the individual briefly focuses on the trauma memory while engaging in either eye movements, hand vibrations, tapping, or sound in an effort to stimulate different parts of the brain that are often impacted by trauma. Typically individuals experience a reduction in the vividness and emotion association with trauma memories. Ongoing research also supports the use of EMDR for other diagnoses such as anxiety-related disorders.
