National Caregiver Month: How To Navigate Caregiver Burnout
For November’s National Caregiver Month, the team at Sillon Wellness believes that it’s important to discuss the prevalence of caregiver burnout. Caregivers are selfless individuals who play an important role when it comes to helping those in their lives with mental health or other struggles. They provide support and comfort, often with no recognition. While most caregivers are more than happy to fill this need, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of forgetting their own needs.
What Is Caregiver Burnout?
We are all burdened each day with our own responsibilities and stress. Caregivers carry that, along with the needs of another. This can very quickly become overwhelming and all-consuming, allowing their own needs to be moved to the back burner. With those needs ignored, exhaustion and stress can run rampant, depleting the reserves needed to show up as needed both for themselves and for others. Caregiver stress can come from full schedules, financial burdens, a lack of their own support, and a constant emotional roller coaster. Signs of caregiver burnout can include:
- Increased anxiety
- Sleep disturbances
- Mood swings
- Extreme fatigue
- Loss of interest
- Appetite changes
- Personal neglect
- Isolation
How Common Is Caregiver Burnout?
Caregiver burnout is common, with over 60% of caregivers reporting declining mental health. Their days can feel overbooked, taking care of their own day-to-day responsibilities while supporting those of another. With a never-ending list of physical, mental and financial obligations with no break in sight, it’s easy to see why a person’s energy and spirit can run dry. The good news is – it doesn’t have to end this way.
How To Balance Caregiving and Self-Care
If you are currently or have ever been a caregiver to another, we don’t have to tell you how stressful it can be. Putting someone else first may come naturally, while knowing when it’s time to prioritize yourself doesn’t always come so easily. When you’re not your best, though, you can’t expect to give your best to anyone else. Ensuring you’re in a good headspace will allow you to show up better for others. Here are some ways to make sure your own needs are being met:
Set Boundaries
Understand your limits, and kindly yet firmly implement boundaries.
Get Moving
Take time each day to move your body. Exercise can help clear your mind while nourishing your body.
Stay Healthy
Your own health matters! Keep up to date on routine check-ups, eat a nutritious diet and stay hydrated.
Quiet Your Mind
Create a routine that works to calm your mind when it needs a break. This looks different for everyone, but may include a quiet walk, meditation, a warm bath or deep breathing exercises.
Relax & Rest
Allow yourself a full night’s sleep in a calming environment.
Treat Yourself
Don’t forget to treat yourself now and then – a new book, a trip to the spa, or a lunch date with a friend can boost morale and help fill your cup.
Find Community
There are support groups for caregivers that can provide a sense of community – people who understand the nuances of caregiving and can relate. If you are unable to find one locally, seek one out online.
Ask For Help
Asking for help is always okay. If you need a break from your caregiving duties, reach out to a trusted friend, family member or respite services to provide a temporary reprieve. For more targeted help coping with your caregiving role, a professional therapist like those at Sillon Wellness can provide tools to help sort through and cope with the complicated feelings that can coincide with caregiving.
How Do Caregivers Benefit From Therapy?
Therapy provides caregivers a judgement-free outlet to express their feelings, fears and needs. Through science-backed treatment, our team can help you manage stress, sort through emotions, work through grief and isolation, and allow you space to talk through what you’re going through. Our team has experience with many caregivers, utilizing treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). During a complimentary 15-minute phone call, we can discuss your needs and goals to help determine the best type of therapy for you.
